Green Architectural Design and State-of-the-Art Equipment
May companies decide to choose a green hosting provider in order to be environmentally responsible and for good reason. According to an article on Information Week, the energy consumed by data center servers and related infrastructure equipment worldwide has more than doubled during year 2000 and 2005. That is an alarming statistic.
Internet users hunger for everything from Web to video, to music downloads and Internet telephony. The use of the web is growing exponentially and there are no signs of this growth slowing.
More than just Renewable Energy Credits (RECs)
Many so called “green” web hosting providers simply purchase REC’s (Renewable Energy Credits), then market their web hosting services to the Internet community as “green”. At Green Host it, we have gone a step further.
Green Architectural Design
The data center has true-green features and was built with state-of-the-art environmentally responsible features:
- N+1 cooling and power architectures, with state-of-the-art, high-efficiency water-cooled chillers from Turbine Air Systems (TAS).
- An equipment galley, located outside of the data center floor, will hold six large air-handling units and all chilled water piping. Because all water is located outside of the actual data center floor, the design eliminates the possibility of an interior water leak.
- The new TAS cooling system provides a modular mechanical installation. Rather than securing multiple components from a broad array of vendors, TAS manufactures an all-in-one system with a single point of contact for maintenance and service. In addition, TAS guarantees the energy efficiency specifics of its systems.
- The new data center’s cooling system will provide twice the efficiency and use half the energy of other data centers. It is expected that this will lead to a 1.3 “co-efficiency of efficiency” ranking, which is well below the 1.6 “ideal” rating. This score, recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and The Uptime Institute, measures the total power necessary to operate a data center, divided by critical power, which represents the energy required to operate its servers.
